We were pleased to see that Brixton Cycles reached their fundraising target and made £30,675, after a three week electrical fault! Things are tough for lots of co-ops, now Black Cat Cafe in Hackney, London, have launched their own fundraiser and are looking for volunteers and new members too.
We visited two east Anglia members in February, with our member Stir to Action. Stir is researching democratic practice and innovation as part of their Democratic Business initiative.
Leading Lives is our largest member with nearly 400 employees. LL provides social care support, mainly for people with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs, and has won numerous awards for the quality of their work. We talked with Boo Dendy and colleagues at their Stowmarket Community Hub, a day centre where clients can increase or maintain independence.
Delta-T devices is our longest-trading member. Based in Cambridge, the co-op works in soil moisture, data logging and plant science technology, and has a global reputation for innovative high performance sensors. We were invited to discuss the co-op's culture and plans with their co-op advisory group before a tour of the site with Mike Rudge and Edmund Potter, who was involved in the early years of the Industrial Common Ownership Movement. ICOM was our forerunner organisation for worker co-ops in the UK. |
